Water and Electrolytes
Every single cell in your body relies on water and electrolytes for its fundamental functions and energy production.
The Foundation of Cellular Strength
From Colin McDermott, APRN, FNP-C.:
As a functional medicine nurse practitioner at Synergy Integrative Health, I often remind patients: water and electrolytes are the lifeblood of every cell. Without proper hydration and mineral balance, even the most disciplined patriot can't perform at peak capacity.
Every single cell in your body relies on water and electrolytes for its fundamental functions and energy production. Water serves as the medium for biochemical reactions, nutrient transport, waste removal, and temperature regulation. Electrolytes—charged minerals like sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and others—create electrical gradients across cell membranes. This enables nerve impulses, muscle contractions, ATP (energy) generation in mitochondria, and overall cellular vitality. When these are out of balance, fatigue, cramps, brain fog, irregular heartbeat, and poor recovery set in—issues we see far too often in chronic illness.
How much do you need? There's no one-size-fits-all amount—it depends on your activity level, health status, occupation (especially if you're outdoors or in physically demanding work), and body size. A general starting point for adults is about half your body weight in ounces of water daily (e.g., a 180-pound person aims for ~90 ounces), but active individuals, athletes, construction workers, farmers, or those in hot Nebraska summers may need significantly more—often 1+ ounce per pound of body weight, plus extra to replace sweat losses. Listen to your body: thirst, urine color (pale yellow is ideal), energy levels, and performance are your best guides.
Filtered water is the smartest choice for daily hydration. Tap water can contain particles, chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and other contaminants that burden your detox pathways and contribute to inflammation over time. A quality home filter—whether a pitcher, under-sink system, or whole-house setup—removes these harmful elements, delivering cleaner, purer water that supports rather than hinders your health.

Key electrolytes must stay in balance daily for optimal cell function. Sodium and potassium work together like a pump—sodium outside the cell, potassium inside—powering the sodium-potassium ATPase that drives energy production and nerve signaling. A healthy ratio (often around 2:1 to 4:1 potassium to sodium from whole foods) prevents issues like high blood pressure or muscle weakness.

Magnesium (and supporting electrolytes like calcium) plays starring roles in muscle contraction, cardiac function, blood pressure regulation, and fluid balance. Magnesium helps relax muscles after contraction, supports heart rhythm, calms the nervous system, and aids in over 300 enzymatic reactions—including those for energy. Deficiencies are rampant in modern diets and can lead to cramps, fatigue, hypertension, and poor stress resilience.
At Synergy Integrative Health, we assess hydration and electrolyte status through comprehensive labs and tailor recommendations—whether through diet (leafy greens, avocados, nuts, sea salt, bone broth), high-quality supplements, or our in-house IV therapy for rapid repletion.
Your body speaks through signals like thirst, energy dips, or muscle twitches—we listen and respond. Prioritize clean water and balanced electrolytes to fuel the cellular engine that powers your life, your family, and our nation's future.
